NorDan invests in glass technology startup Hybridized
Looking to reduce the carbon footprint of future windows, the Norwegian-based window group NorDan takes active ownership of the glass tech startup Hybridized.
Building on a decades-long tradition of innovation and sustainable thinking, NorDan is no stranger to challenging currently leading solutions. With the investment in Hybridized, the main goal is to further push the envelope for carbon footprint reduction of glazing, the main negative contributor to timber window construction. Following the investment, NorDan Group CEO, Dag Kroslid, will join the Hybridized board.
Innovative technology
The push for improved energy efficiency in windows comes with a cost. When combining the often large dimensions of windows in modern buildings with triple-layered glazing units, the total weight, amount of raw material and light transmission become challenging to scale. Also, the triple-layered insulated glass unit (IGU) constitutes more than 50% of the global warming potential of a window, measured in kg CO2e.
By replacing the middle of the three panes of glass with an ultra-thin flexible material, Hybridized’s unique production technology promises to reduce weight, reduce the amount of glass, and reduce the global warming potential of the IGU with some 30% (for a triple-layered IGU). It comes together with an increase in light transmission. The Hybridized production technology also enables the implementation of additional smart technologies with reduced costs and material use.
Atle Geving, Hybridized CEO, said
“We have a unique solution to a problem that will only become more important in the future: Achieving more with less. With substantial industry partnerships with suppliers such as LiSEC, Edgetech and several customers interested, we look forward to establishing production. Our solution can contribute to reducing buildings’ energy consumption and goes hand in hand with reduced weight and use of materials through our Hybrid insulation glass
With NorDan on board, we get an innovative industrial partner with an ambitious product sustainability strategy. In addition, they have a clear manufacturing heritage and know what it takes to scale complex manufacturing processes and bring innovations to the markets in which they operate.”
Dag Kroslid, NorDan Group CEO said:
“At NorDan, we are actively involved in discovering, supporting and investing in solutions that can improve product sustainability. Innovative glazing technology is crucial in reducing the embodied carbon of the windows we manufacture. Through partnerships with suppliers and customers, we can accelerate the carbon footprint reduction. We look forward to innovating, developing and disrupting together with Hybridized. Our investment into Hybridized is part of a larger step-up program that NorDan runs, with the ORAE® glass from Saint-Gobain as another recently launched initiative.”
